What is File History Feature?

File History feature in Windows 8.1 and Windows RT 8.1 regularly backs up versions of your files in the Document, Music, Pictures, Videos and Desktop folders and the OneDrive files available offline on your computer. If you accidentally damage or delete the original files, you can recover the files by using the File History feature.

How to Recover Your Files and Folders?

1. Press Ctrl and C keys to pull out the Charm bar and click the Search. And then type “file history” in the search box and click on the icon of Restore your files with File History.

2. Make use of the search box to search the file you’re looking for and click the left or right arrow to see the versions and the dates. Then select the file you want and click the green button to restore the file to original location.

If you click an older version of an existing file or folder, the system will show you three points. If you don’t want to keep the existing file or folder, you can select the option of Replace the file in the destination.

If you want to restore your files to a different location instead of the original, press and hold or right-click the Restore button, click Restore To, and then choose a new location.
