How to Remove Shortcut Arrow in Windows 7 & 8

To make computer desktop a bit cleaner, some computer users want to remove the little arrows from their shortcut icons. If you don’t like the arrows on shortcut icons, you can follow this tutorial to remove them.

1. Press Win + R keys to open Run box and enter “regedit”, click Ok button.

2. Navigate to the registry key below when you are in Registry Editor window.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Icons

If you can’t find the Shell Icons under Explorer key, you need to right click Explorer and select New -> Key. And type Shell Icons for the new key’s name.

3. Click the Shell Icons, and right click on an empty area in the right pane. Select New -> String Value, and set 29 as the new value’s name.

4. Double click the 29 String Value and add the data below to the value data box.

Note: You can enter %windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-30 if you want classic arrows to be attached to desktop shortcuts.

If you want to recover the default shortcut arrows, you can add %windir%\System32\shell32.dll,-16769 to the value data box.

5. When it is done, log off your PC so that the modification you made can take effect.
